Shannon Clements | Photographing your Pet

What I need:

I need a photo in the pose you wish your pet to be in and a close up to help get a more accurate depiction of their expression and eyes.  For head studies just one close up picture would be fine, making sure the expression represents your pet. Additional reference photos can be sent if you feel they will help me understand your pet’s personality better.

Shoot at the highest resolution possible and email them to me at the same high resolution. You may need to send more than one email.

Photos can be sent through e-mail or snail mail. If you send regular paper photos, contact me and I will let you know the address.  Any paper photos sent will be returned with the completed portrait.

Photo Tips:

The best lighting would be outdoors in hazy sun; however, you may want to try a variety of lighting situations

If taking your pet outside is not possible, try taking the photos inside near a window or door on a bright day. Be sure to have your back towards the window with the animal facing towards the natural light.

Try not to use flash. If you must, set flash for "red-eye".

Shots from their eye level are best.  Try to fill the frame with the pet.

If you want your pet shown with their favorite toy or in a particular setting (i.e. a favorite chair, in your garden, on their bed) try to either include them in the photo or send additional photos of those items.

Having another person around might be helpful. They could stand behind you with treats or a toy to get the pet’s attention or if needed to hold your pet.

Portraits of Two (or more) Pets

I can take two separate photos and combine into one portrait, but it would be nice to have at least one picture with them together for size comparison. If you can photograph them using the same light source this would be helpful.
